PSAC Public Survey Print E-mail

In June 2009, PSAC commissioned Ipsos Reid to conduct benchmark opinion research with residents of communities within the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB).

Survey Objectives
Some of the key objectives of this research were to:

• Provide benchmark measures of public attitudes, beliefs, knowledge and perceptions of the petroleum industry in the WCSB.
• Support the development and operation of a communications campaign directed at Canadians living in the Upstream industry’s Western operating regions.
• Deliver information to PSAC to assist in increasing public awareness and understanding of Canada’s petroleum industry and the role of its member companies.

Survey Coverage
The telephone survey covered 12 oil and gas regions encompassing over 135 communities across the WCSB, including Bonnyville, Drayton Valley, Edson, Grande Prairie, High Prairie / Slave Lake, Lloydminster / Vermilion, Medicine Hat / Brooks, Peace River, Red Deer and Rocky Mountain House in Alberta, as well as northeast British Columbia and southern Saskatchewan.

Key Results
The 1,152 surveys conducted produced the following data highlights:

• Top three overall issues for respondents were employment, health care and the economy.
• 58% of respondents viewed the industry favourably.
• 59% of respondents viewed the companies working in their communities favourably.
• 79% of respondents agreed the industry is believable.
• 63% of respondents said they were interested in learning more about the oil and gas industry.
