|
The petroleum service, supply and manufacturing sector consists of businesses that provide the specialized equipment and skills needed for drilling, testing, producing, maintaining and reclaiming crude oil and natural gas wells. Many of these businesses involve the development and use of highly advanced technology.
Most of the companies in the sector are members of the Petroleum Services Association of Canada (PSAC). They work closely with exploration and production companies-mainly represented by the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) and the Small Explorers and Producers Association of Canada (SEPAC)-and with drilling contractors who are often members of the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors (CAODC).
In 2000, the Canadian Energy Research Institute estimated that 25,600 Canadians were directly employed in the petroleum service, supply and manufacturing sector and another 14,600 jobs were created indirectly through the sector's activities.
